The short stories of Babel are an interesting, if challenging read. The poetic and gruesome sketches of Konarmia, reflecting a soldier's unadulterated view of the front in a bitter and harrowing war, are short but dense with difficult language. It is worth trying to read them with the English text alongside, to get a flavour of the beauty and wealth of his language, but don't be disheartened by the extent of unknown vocabulary.

Биография

Бабель - русский советский писатель, журналист и драматург, известный своими «Одесскими рассказами» и сборником «Конармия» о Первой Конной Армии, части кавалерии Красной Армии, созданной во время Гражданской войны в России 1918−1920 годов.

Бабель родился в 1894 году в Одессе на Черном море. Он был евреем и владел идишем, русским и французским языками. Бабель выжил во время погрома 1905 года (его спрятала христианская семья), а его дед стал одним из трёхсот убитых тогда евреев.

В 1920 году Бабель был назначен в 1-ю Конную армию и стал участником Советско-польской войны 1920 года. Всю кампанию Бабель вёл дневник («Конармейский дневник» 1920 год), который послужил основой для сборника рассказов «Конармия», в котором насилие и жестокость русских красноармейцев сильно контрастирует с интеллегентностью самого Бабеля.

В 1924 году опубликовал ряд рассказов, позднее составивших циклы «Конармия» и «Одесские рассказы». Бабель сумел мастерски передать на русском языке стилистику литературы, созданной на идише (особенно это заметно в «Одесских рассказах», где местами прямая речь его героев является подстрочным переводом с идиша).
